The Canton Police Department is currently seeking potential candidates for current and future positions within our department. Individuals who are interested, that meet the required standards and qualifications and who are entry-level (non-sworn) or experienced (sworn) Officers are encouraged to submit an application.
 
Employment Criteria
 

  • Must be 21 years of age for sworn positions or 18 years of age for civilian positions
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license (GA)
  • No Felony convictions
  • An honorable discharge (if prior military)
  • No adverse driving record
 
Salaries
 
  • Police Officer Trainee - $39,495.15
  • Certified Police Officer - $43,147.87
  • Certified Police Officer (Assoc. Degree + $1,500)
  • Certified Police Officer (Bach. Deg. additional $1,500) 
  •  Certified Police Officer (Experience + $1,250) 
  •  Certified Police Officer (Interpret Spanish + $1,500)  
  •  Certified Police Officer (FTO Pay + $1,500) 
  •  Additional pay incentives for select certifications
 
Job Summary
 
This position of Police Officer is responsible for the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and the protection of life and property. An employee within this job is considered to be an Essential Emergency Worker and is subject to on-call.
 
Major Duties
 
  • Employees will patrol residential and commercial areas within the city, in order to deter and detect criminal activity and traffic violations.
  • Enforce traffic and parking laws through the issuance of warnings and citations; inspect roadways, bridges, and traffic signals and signs to identify and report hazardous conditions.
  • Respond to calls relayed by communication officers, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing person searches, public service requests, stranded motorists, and other calls for service.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations into traffic accidents and other incidents, including interviewing victims, complainants, and witnesses, gathering information and evidence and securing crime scenes.
  • Apprehend, arrest and process offenders, including fugitives, and subpoenaed witnesses.
  • Maintain traffic control through observation and use of speed detection devices; tests and detain drivers suspected of driving un the influence; issue traffic citations; participate in the department’s selective enforcement details.
  • Provide traffic direction as needed for funerals, parades, sporting events, and school crossings.
  • Prepare criminal and search warrant, complaints, and affidavits; serve criminal and court-related paperwork.
  • Testify in judicial proceedings, as necessary.
  • Provide assistance and backup support to other officers and emergency service providers as necessary.
  • Complete all required reports and forms, including accident and incident reports
  • Inspect and maintain assigned patrol vehicles, uniforms, and equipment.
 
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities for the Position
  • Knowledge of relevant, federal, and state laws, criminals, and traffic course search and seizure laws, town ordinances, and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of traffic accident investigation techniques and procedures
  • Knowledge of the geography and streets of the city.
  • Knowledge of the court system and judicial procedures
  • Skill in the use of a computer
  • Skill in operating police vehicles, firearms, and emergency equipment.
  • Skill in operating radios and communications equipment
  • Skill to operate radar and lidar equipment
  • Skill in restraining persons without causing physical harm
  • Skill in oral and written communication
