The Law Department of DeKalb County, Georgia, has an opening for Assistant County Attorney.  This position provides legal counsel to assigned departments and officials.  Incumbents in this class are assigned multiple or a larger department.

Essential Functions:

Serves as counsel in representing the legal interest of the County for assigned departments in accordance with state laws and rules of professional conduct.

Represents assigned departments in litigation.

Drafts and reviews contracts and agreements; reviews contracts for compliance with internal policies and procedures, as well as local, state and federal laws and conducts research.

Represents assigned departments in personnel matters, attends Merit System hearings and other proceedings.

Represents County Tax Assessor in tax appeals.

Develops and reviews legislation; reviews, drafts, and interprets laws, ordinances, regulations, and resolutions; reviews and interprets pending and new legislation.

Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Juris Doctorate degree required; five years of experience practicing law; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license; and must possess and maintain licensure from the Georgia State Bar Association. A criminal background check is completed on all candidates. Employment is contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of the background investigation and drug tests.

Preferred Experience

• Civil litigation experience in state and federal courts.
• Experience representing local governments or state government in Open Records Act matters.
• Experience representing public safety officials and officers in litigation.
• Experience representing local governments and local government officials in litigation.
