Job Summary

Performs intermediate skilled technical work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive, construction and light equipment. Maintains the workshop area, and related work as apparent or assigned. This job is performed under the close supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor or the Assistant Director. The employee routinely operates a county vehicle in the performance of duties.

Essential Functions

Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and repairs vehicles and heavy equipment to include engine, transmission, electrical, and brake problems using diagnostic tools and equipment; performs road tests to observe operation of vehicle and all systems.                

Performs major and minor repairs, replacement, and/or rebuilding of engines and engine components such as head gaskets, injection pumps, injectors, transmissions, or transmission and electrical components.

Performs general repair and preventative maintenance to vehicles and heavy equipment; changes/replaces all fluids and filers; performs rear differential service; rotates/changes tires; replaces clutches, water pumps, drive belts, brakes, bulbs, wipers, and blower motors.

Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio and responds to inquiries, complaints, and                                                                       service requests.

Operates a variety of automotive, construction, and maintenance equipment; services and repairs motorized equipment, lawnmowers, all-terrain vehicles, tractors, chainsaws, and weed eaters.

Orders and maintains parts, chemicals, and lubricants inventory.

Enforces general cleaning and housekeeping tasks associated with a garage or maintenance shop; ensures work safety factors are met for staff.

Visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices.

Assembly of or fabrication or parts within arm’s length.

Operating machines, motor vehicles, and equipment.

Assists with seasonal roadway maintenance issues such as debris from flooding and windstorms, snow removal and ice control

Encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.

Performs position related duties as required with regular and reliable attendance.

Complies with Meriwether County policies and procedures.

Additional Responsibilities

Other duties as assigned by County Administrator, Director, or Deputy Director.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for Job Performance

Thorough knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery.

General knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of automotive cars, trucks, construction, and maintenance equipment, including gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic and airbrake systems.

Ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts.

Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.

Ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and installation and repair charts.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.

Mechanical aptitude, and ability to operate personal computer including some knowledge of applicable software packages.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, associates, and the general public.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED and considerable experience in automotive, construction, and specialized equipment repair, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Possession of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification preferred.

 

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force.

Regularly requires speaking, hearing, and using hands to handle or feel.

Frequently requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, reaching, and repetitive motions; and occasionally requires sitting, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling, and lifting.

Working near moving mechanical parts, frequent.

Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, vibrations, occasional toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock. (Wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus)

Work is generally in a loud location. (Ground, maintenance, and heavy traffic.)

Has standard vision, vocal communication, and hearing requirements.

Requires preparing and analyzing, written or computer data.

Special Requirements

Favorable background history as determined by review of local, State, and Federal records. Valid Class B driver’s license in the State of Georgia. (Class A is preferred.)
