JOB SUMMARY

This position is lead position responsible for overseeing crews involved in repairing and maintaining roads, drainage systems, and/or water collection/distribution systems. Work may involve: maintaining, repairing, and operating light and heavy construction equipment; repairing water distribution/collection systems and appurtenances such as water mains, service lines, meters, fire hydrants, valves, sewer mains, sewer service lines, man holes, and lift stations; and/or repairing and maintaining roads and drainage systems.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Leads one or more crews of workers engaged in department duties, such as cutting grass, patching roads, improving drainage systems, and/or repairing water distribution and sewer collection systems.
  • Serves as a lead worker; assigns work within crew; instructs and trains in methods and procedures; and monitors work in progress.
  • May coordinate routes and schedules of crew members.
  • May generate work orders.
  • Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment used in the maintenance of City streets, water systems, sewer systems and rights-of-way such as tractors, dump trucks, paving equipment, push mowers, edger’s, weed eaters, jack hammer, and dirt compactors.
  • Drives and operates the department assigned vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Performs operating procedures specific to department needs; assists in working on special projects.
  • Performs the duties of the workers as necessary.
  • Responds to and participates in emergency calls as needed and as assigned.
  • Responds to customer complaints.
  • May order supplies, materials, chemicals, or equipment depending on needs of crew/department.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Requires High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Three (3) years of related work experience; preferably with some experience in operating heavy equipment and mechanical repair; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Valid Georgia state driver’s license - Class C.
  • Satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Certification required for job responsibilities and duties as determined by supervisor.

Special Requirements:

  • None.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the operation of light and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic techniques related to road construction.
  • Skill in driving both light and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work in a variety of extreme weather conditions for extended periods of times.
  • Ability to serve as a lead worker.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and to efficiently carry them out with minimal instruction.
  • Ability to follow established safety rules and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to drive and operate the department assigned vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium work and requires exerting: up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; up to 30 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is performed in indoor or outdoor environment and near moving mechanical equipment.
