This position is responsible for the investigation of crime scenes for the purpose of locating, collecting, documenting and analyzing evidence. Strict regulations contribute to the complexity of the position. Collects, preserves and packages evidence. Ensures a valid chain of custody for all evidence. Prepares detailed crime scene reports. Testifies in court regarding the finds and processing methods used on evidence. Maintains, services and stocks crime scene vehicle. Maintains photo processor. Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and level of competency associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills of a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with having had a similar position for one (1) to two (2) years. Possession of a valid Georgia driver’s license. Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Police Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia. Knowledge of departmental and city policies and procedures and federal, state and local guidelines. Knowledge of computer and job related software programs. Knowledge of basic photographic principles. Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the physical, chemical and fluorescent development of latent fingerprints. Knowledge and skill in the analysis of crime scenes and of crime scene reconstruction. Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions. Skill in oral and written communication and in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.

The work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and distinguishes between shades of color. The work is performed in an office and at crime scenes, occasionally outdoors and in cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
