Americus, Georgia is located in Sumter County in southwest Georgia 132 miles from Atlanta and nine miles from Plains, the home of America's 39th President and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Jimmy Carter.

The City of Americus operates under the City Manager form of government. Policy making and legislative authority are vested in the governing body which consists of a Mayor and six council members all elected on a nonpartisan basis. Council members serve four-year staggered terms, with three council members elected every two years. The Mayor is elected at large to serve a four-year term. The six council members are elected by district. The governing body is responsible for passing ordinances, adopting the budget and appointing the City Manager, Municipal Court Judge and the City Attorney. The City Manager is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of the governing body and for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the government.

The Director, Public Works is appointed by and responsible to the City Manager for performing executive level administrative, supervisory and technical work in directing the activities of a full-service public works department which includes water/sewer, storm water, streets, grounds and fleet maintenance. The Department employs thirty-three (33) FTE’s. The beginning salary for this position is negotiable depending on experience, knowledge, skills and ability.

Job Description

Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to: Planning, directing and supervising all departmental activities for Water, Wastewater, Streets, Solid Waste, and Stormwater division functions. Supervising and evaluating assigned staff; addressing employee concerns, directing work assignments, counseling and disciplining employees, and completing employee performance evaluation and appraisals.

Conducting administrative policy duties for the department including writing agendas, reports, preparing and monitoring annual budget, proposing ordinances and resolutions, and proposing policy changes, including contract compliance.

Managing response during emergencies to protect, repair, and maintain public infrastructure including roadways, traffic signals, stormwater systems, and public dams, and development of stormwater rate structure to fund stormwater annual operating and capital budget; also, coordinating local public improvement projects with State and Federal officials according to relevant laws, rules, and regulations.


Required Qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree in the hard sciences such as Civil Engineering, Business Administration or a closely related field, plus six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in public works management or closely related experience. Preferential consideration will be given to candidates that possess a Professional Engineer (PE) License. Required qualifications may be any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
