The City of Temple, located in Carroll County, Georgia, along Interstate 20, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Recreation Director.  The position is responsible for the overall administration, direction, and operation of the Parks and Recreation functions for the City of Temple.  This includes directing the planning for and implementation of a comprehensive program of leisure services, maintaining all recreation facilities, directing development of short-term and long-range plans for the Recreation Department, monitoring expenditures, and preparing the annual budget request, as well as training, supervising, and evaluating department staff members.  The Recreation Director is a full-time FLSA exempt position.

DUTIES  AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  This individual must be capable of performing responsible professional, administrative, and supervisory work, and must have a working knowledge of various athletic and leisure activities and facilities.  The Recreation Director delegates certain duties and activities to full- and part-time staff members as well as handling certain responsibilities personally, and he/she coordinates with volunteers and athletic league officials in accomplishing the department’s year-round mission.  In addition to a “regular work day” and a “regular work week”, the director may need to work on some weekends and holidays.

The Recreation Director is expected to contribute importantly to short-term and long-range planning of the City of Temple’s capital improvements program and of various parks and recreation projects.  This person is responsible for the initial preparation of the department’s annual budget and for operating within the budget limits throughout the fiscal year.  He/She is to exercise independent judgment and to employ discretion, while following City ordinances, policies, and procedures.  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with the City’s elected officials, other staff members, and the general public.  Within the City of Temple government structure, the Recreation Director reports to the City Administrator.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, supplemented by a minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Minimum of three years of supervisory experience.  Very good customer service skills, with relevant experience.  Skill in public speaking and in writing.  Good knowledge of Georgia Parks and Recreation Association guidelines, as well as the principles and practices of public and recreation administration and of the theories and techniques of recreation service delivery for various age groups.  Must have a good knowledge of computers and basic computer programs.  Valid Georgia driver’s license.
