This position performs specialized work in the protection of life and property through controlling and extinguishing fires, providing emergency medical and rescue services, and participating in fire prevention activities.


  • Responds to emergency calls involving medical emergencies, fires, natural disasters, and hazardous materials incidents; takes appropriate actions to minimize the loss of life and property.
  • Performs search and rescue, extrication, evacuation, suppression, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, and other operations as needed.
  • Provides patient care on emergency calls.
  • Operates apparatus at incident scenes according to procedures and practices as assigned.
  • Responds to non-emergency service calls to assist the public.
  • Inspects, tests, and cleans assigned vehicles and equipment; reports any hazards or maintenance issues to Station Officer.
  • Inputs information related to incidents, patient care, apparatus reports, and training hours to related databases.
  • Participates in public Fire and EMS programs; provides station tours; provides CPR training; stands-by at public events.
  • Performs fire hydrant service: measures water flow and pressures.
  • Conducts pre-fire planning for businesses; identifies physical layout, hazards, and contact information.
  • Maintains station facilities and grounds.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


  • Knowledge of current principles, practices and techniques used in fire and emergency medical operations.
  • Knowledge of city streets and geography.
  • Knowledge of all fire suppression and equipment and its placement on vehicles.
  • Knowledge of firefighting techniques, policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Skill in performing many and varied firefighting techniques and procedures.
  • Skill in reacting quickly and calmly while under pressure.
  • Skill in operating fire suppression equipment, medical equipment, and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Skill in understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions.
  • Skill in communicating and interacting effectively with co-workers, other City employees and the general public.
  • Skill in the use and maintenance of firefighting equipment.


  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.
  • Possession of Emergency Medical Technician license or higher.
