The City of Cordele, a local municipal government in South Georgia serving a population of approximately 12,000 citizens, is actively searching for Payroll Clerk / Utility Billing Assistant candidates.  Located 100 miles North of the Florida state line, and served by three exits on Interstate 75, Cordele is the commercial hub of Crisp County and offers excellent growth opportunities for hotels, restaurants, retail, recreational and healthcare facilities.


A skilled clerical position responsible for payroll and as a back-up for utility billing, documentation of payroll and utility billing accounting records.  This position is under the direct supervision of the Assistant Finance Director.


Payroll - Primary function includes maintenance and processing payroll and necessary tasks associated with payroll including accounts payable related to payroll.  Some examples of these duties are:

  • Performs clerical and accounting tasks utilizing a computerized payroll and general accounting practices.
  • Prepares payroll information for computer input and enters data.
  • Operates computerized payroll system.
  • Maintains employee records relating to garnishments, and all other payroll deductions.
  • Assures compliance of current laws and statutes applicable to payroll function.
  • Types letters, forms and reports.
  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Utility Billing Assistant - Primary function includes assisting the Customer Service Supervisor in the maintenance and processing of the utility billing system.  Some examples of these duties are:

  • Prepares reading devices for Meter Readers to gather utility usage information.
  • Assists Customer Service Clerks with preparing and distributing work orders.
  • Assures completion of work orders for billing purposes.
  • Processes account edits for utility bills including requesting re-reads of meters with unusually high or low usage.
  • Processes utility bill bank drafts for each billing cycle.
  • Posts late charges to unpaid utility bills.
  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.


  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Minimum education of a high school diploma or equivalent plus one (1) year of vocational training in computer operations or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training.
  • One year of payroll experience preferred.
  • Experience with Paychex Payroll system preferred but not required.
  • Skilled in both written and oral communications, including grammar and spelling, with the ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Some knowledge of personnel records systems.
  • Must complete a background check including criminal, driver, personal and previous employment references.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Georgia driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Must be able to work department hours including overtime when necessary.
  • Must be able to travel out of town, including overnight stays, to attend classes, training, workshops, seminars or other work-related events.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain and effective working relationship with other coworkers, supervisors and the general public.
