Storm Water Equipment Operator - Full-Time

The City of Norcross is looking for a full-time Storm Water Equipment Operator to start immediately. This position's purpose is to operate heavy-duty equipment needed to make repairs. The incumbent in this position will operate equipment used to repair water and sewer lines. The incumbent will also be responsible for stabilizing banks, creeks & ditches and correcting erosion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates a backhoe, front-end loader, trencher, air compressor, and other tools used in making water and sewer line taps and repairs.
  • Prepares trenches and lays pipe.
  • Repairs streets and drainage ditches.
  • Replaces water meters as needed.
  • Cleans and maintains vehicles and equipment as required.
  • Stabilizing banks, creeks & ditches. Corrects erosion.
  • May be assigned as a crew leader.
  • Jets and cleans out stormwater infrastructure.
  • Assists other departmental crews as needed.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  •  High School diploma or GED and one to three years of experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must comply with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Part 382 - Controlled Substances and Alcohol Use and Testing Policy.
  • Possess a valid Georgia Driver's License for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • A valid Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Any other duties as assigned by the Storm Water Superintendent. Ability to be ‘on-call’ and quickly respond to emergencies and management requests.

Scope and Impact:

The position has recurring work situations involving high degrees of discretion. The need for accuracy and effective utilization of accepted programs and routines is high. Errors in judgment will waste resources and adversely impact performance. Incumbent operates independently, but work is verified. The content of work priorities is determined by supervision. Successful performance helps ensure safe and attractive streets and a positive public image for the city.

Communications/Customer Contact:

Contact is typical with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public. The nature of the interaction is generally to provide and/or exchange information and services.


  • Knowledge of equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of water line repair techniques.
  • Skill in operating a dump truck, front-end loader, backhoe, air tools, trenchers, weed eaters, and other heavy equipment.
  • Skill in using standard tools (e.g., shovels, picks, wrenches, etc.).
  • Skill in repairing streets.
  • Skill in operating a dump truck and lawn mower.
  • Skill in following verbal directions.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: starting at $40,896.84 (minimum) up to 53,165.89 (midpoint) based upon qualifications/experience.
