MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Chief Judge of Recorder’s Court is responsible for the overall operation of Recorder’s Court. The judge’s responsibilities include: sets the work schedule for other judges pro-tem and approves their training; sets court policies and procedures; approves of leave times for judges pro-tem; assigns substitutes for judges pro-tem that are absent, and approves all judicial budgetary expenditures.


Hears traffic, criminal and city ordinance cases made by the Columbus Police Department, Special Enforcement, Airport Police, Housing Authority, Metro Narcotic Task Force, Fire/EMS Department, Georgia State Patrol and the Columbus State University Police Department.


Responsible for setting bail, issue warrants, collect fines/bonds, hear and determine if probable cause exists for Superior/State Court offenses, and adjudicate City Ordinances and certain state offenses.


Create a positive image to the defendants, witnesses, and attorneys, as well as other departments in order to effectively provide justice in a prompt and courteous manner. Act in a fair and professional manner.


Meet with the City Council at least once a year, and at other times at the request of Council, to review the budget of the court, review compliance with the requirements and operational standards of the court, discuss other items of common concern, and certify that the operational standards for the court have been met during the prior year.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of operation of Recorder’s Court. Knowledge of laws affecting public and individual rights and obligations; court policies and procedures; legal terminology and court documents; public administration, management, budgeting; public policy and ethical principles. Skill in oral and written communication.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

Juris Doctorate degree and shall have practiced law for a minimum of five (5) years.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching.  The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects; and uses tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.  The work is typically performed in a courtroom, office, library, or computer room.
