CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION

 

CLASSIFICATION TITLE:              DETENTION OFFICER

 

 

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

 

The purpose of this classification is to provide for the care, custody, control and management of prisoners in the County jail, ensuring safe and secure operations of the jail.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

The following duties are normal for this position.  The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

Provides security at the County jail; conducts safety, security and fire checks of the jail; maintains constant surveillance via visual observation, surveillance cameras and monitors; ensures all safety and security equipment is operational and in proper use at all times; maintains controls and keys for all locks, security devices, doors, etc. 

 

Monitors inmates; ensures orderly behavior; maintains a safe and secure environment; and conducts head count/roll call to account for the presence and state of all inmates; ensures inmates do not harm others or themselves; closely monitors inmates who may be suicidal; and restrains violent inmates.

 

Informs supervisor of emergency situations, potential problems, and other issues needing management’s attention and action.

 

Processes incoming inmates; conducts booking procedures; books inmates; obtains fingerprints and photographs; records arraignment and criminal history; searches property, clothing bags and possessions; inventories and secures property; and provides rules and regulations to inmate.

Provides general care to inmates; provides opportunities for exercise; prepares and/or delivers meals; delivers mail; provides basic first aide as needed; administers medications;  makes, takes and gives prisoner phone calls; and reviews and responds to inmate request forms.

 

Supervises visitations from inmate family, attorneys, friends, and other visitors; conducts cell searches; destroys contraband; and monitors recreation yard activities.

 

Maintains jail security devices, equipment and protocols; inspects incoming and outgoing mail; monitors the activities of vendors and ensures their safety and adherence to security procedures.

 

Transports inmates to hospitals, courts, medical appointments or other jail facilities; and coordinates transport activities with court clerks.

 

Prepares records, documentation, logs and other required paperwork pertaining to daily operations, inmate-related activities, inmate rosters, shift activities, and visitation logs; enters information into jail databases; and places records in appropriate files. 

Processes outgoing inmates; prepares and documents bonds for inmates being released on bond; and prepares receipts for bond payments.

Assists with maintaining jail facility; and informs supervisor of equipment and facility repair needs.

Responds to request for information from the general public, inmates, County personnel and court officials.

Operates a personal computer, and other general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.

Uses varied security equipment, two way radios and restraining devices (i.e.  handcuffs)  to perform essential functions.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED; previous corrections or law enforcement experience is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.  Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License.  Must possess Basic Correctional Officer, Detention Officer, CPR and First Aid certifications within six months of hire.
