Major Duties and Responsibilities

The Principal Planner organizes and monitors planning activities that involve the proper determination of land use, development activities, and zoning in accordance with federal, state and local regulations, codes and ordinances. Various duties include, but are not limited to, reviewing and processing applications for zoning changes, special exception uses, variances and subdivision plats; preparing staff reports; serving as Secretary for the Planning Advisory Commission; reviewing and interpreting overlay and special zoning guidelines; and answering zoning inquiries. Duties may also include providing assistance to other staff regarding zoning and land development; researching and drafting ordinance amendments, and development of a new comprehensive plan. This position will be very visible through meetings with citizens, developers, design professionals and city staff, as well as by making presentations to the various boards and the City Council. Carries out a continuous effort to improve operations, work processes and works cooperatively and jointly to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Meets the requirements of Senior Planner; strong knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations related to zoning/subdivision administration; preparation and presentation of concise reports both in oral and written form; ability to prepare and write zoning/planning ordinances; full knowledge of the zoning and subdivision processes; strong communication and leadership skills.

Minimum Educational and Training Requirements

Bachelor's Degree from a four-year college or university in Planning, Public Administration, Geography or other related field is required. Master's degree in Planning preferred; three to five years of progressively responsible related experience; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Physical Requirements

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light or heavy objects.
