JOB SUMMARY

This person in this position is responsible for providing preventive maintenance and minor repair work on all Parks and Recreation maintenance vehicles, (excluding trucks).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                          

  • Performs preventive maintenance work such as changing the engine oil, filters and fluids and replacing brake pads, emergency brakes, rotors, shocks, fuel filters, transmission filters and alternators; performs tune-ups on Parks and Recreation equipment as necessary
  • Operates heavy equipment to assist in the installation of parts
  • Performs tire repair and replacement
  • Keeps all reel and rotary mower’s sharp on a daily and weekly basis for Parks and Recreation mowers; grinds reels on a as needed basis
  • Diagnoses malfunctions;  repairs diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment such as Fairway mower, Zero turn mower, small engines, hydraulic pumps and motors, hydraulic hoses, and cylinder repair, tractors, loaders and other related equipment and machinery
  • Assists  in transmission  removal,  rebuild,  and  replacement;  diagnoses malfunctions and adjusts fuel, electrical, and mechanical systems to specifications; repairs or replaces complete or integral parts of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drive shafts, differentials and lubrication, cooling, exhaust
  • Maintains records of equipment maintenance; makes service calls to start vehicles when necessary
  • Ensures shop area is properly maintained
  • Financial Responsibilities: accountable for inventory/property management; and purchasing authority up to $500.00 without approval from supervisor
  • Assists in maintaining inventory and supplies and in surplus equipment disposal
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Requires High School Diploma or equivalent, and a minimum of three (3) years of work experience; or an equivalent combination of education (engine repair) and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles governing preventive maintenance services of vehicles and equipment;
  • Knowledge  of  the  tools,  equipment,  and  technology  used  in  the  repair  and maintenance of automotive and related equipment;
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the automotive repair trade;
  • Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials of the mechanical trade;
  • Skill in repairing defects in a wide variety of automotive equipment;
  • Ability to use lubrication equipment, tire changers and balancers, and various hand tools to provide preventive maintenance services;
  • Ability to adapt successfully to the wide range of equipment repaired in the shop;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co- workers, and other City employees;

CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires a valid Georgia Class “C” Driver’s license and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), credit, and criminal history.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is very heavy work and requires crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, stooping, visual acuity, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT       

Incumbent spends most of the time working in a physically threatening environment that requires the incumbent to make life and death decisions for themselves and others.
