Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this classification is to perform supervisory and equipment maintenance work in the Fleet Division, including supervising and participating in the maintenance and repair of vehicles, light/heavy equipment, maintenance equipment, and other automotive/mechanical machinery.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Supervises and evaluates assigned staff, processes employee concerns and problems, and may assist in interviewing and hiring new personnel; provides training and development.
  • Assists supervisor in prioritizing, scheduling, and assigning work; oversees and inspects work for proper completion.
  • Ensures staff is trained and that employees follow policies and procedures; maintains a healthy and safe working environment.
  • Serves as division supervisor in absence of same.
  • Tests vehicles, machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations; coordinates warrant work and outsources repair/maintenance work with local dealers, garages, or other service providers; makes service calls to repair equipment and vehicles away from shop.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, such as fluid changes, tire rotations, engine maintenance, and brake servicing.
  • Performs repairs, such as transmission removal and differential assemblies; repairs fire pumps.
  • Performs repairs and preventative maintenance on lawn equipment.
  • Coordinates transportation of fleet vehicles.
  • Prepares and sends reports for approval.
  • Performs other related duties as required. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent; and four (4) years of related experience that includes mechanics, automotive/mechanical maintenance, welding work, equipment operation, and vehicle operation, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications:                                                            

Must possess and maintain valid Forklift Operator Certification. Tasks involving recovery of refrigerant require possession and maintenance of valid Air Conditioning Refrigerant Recovery Certification. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s). Fire Apparatus experience or equivalent experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, and/or summarize data; ability to perform subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Ability to operate and control the actions of equipment and machinery, requiring the monitoring, adjustment, regulation, and/or setting of multiple conditions. 
  • Ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information.
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; may include ability to count, record counts, and perform basic measuring.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form, including semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

 

  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  • Visual Acuity: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work may be performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, fumes, hazardous materials, machinery, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, or toxic agents.
