JOB SUMMARY:   (All Incumbents may not perform all duties.)

 

Operates one or more pieces of heavy equipment at a skilled level such as:  a backhoe, loader, dozer, scraper, grader, pothole patcher, garbage truck or street flusher; operates light equipment such as mowing equipment, cement mixers, asphalt spreaders, etc.  Assists in assigning, checking and approving work of Laborers and other Equipment Operators.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (All incumbents may not perform all duties.)

 

Operates bulldozers, motor graders, and front-end loaders to clear and level land for construction of new streets, roads, parking lots, etc.

 

Operates flat-bed dump trucks to transport materials or haul brush/debris, gravel, asphalt, etc.

 

Operates mowing machines including bush hogs, riding and push mowers to cut grass; cuts down dead trees; clears storm drains; edges sidewalks; plants shrubs; and collects litter/trash.

 

Performs basic maintenance on backhoes, dump trucks and mowers including washing, changing oil, greasing, sharpening blades and changing flat tires.

 

May assist in performing unskilled or semi-skilled labor such as digging/covering graves, collecting trash and residential garbage, pouring concrete, and/or trimming trees and shrubs.

 

May operate a scooter truck when assigned to litter control.

 

May assist in training new employees and in assigning, checking and approving work of Laborers and other Equipment Operators.

 

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

 

Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 

Education and Experience:

 

Ability to read and write.      

 

Four years combined Equipment Operator I or II experience required.

 

Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above.

 

Licenses and Certifications:

 

Valid Class A Driver’s License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

 

Due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position, incumbents will be subject to random drug testing.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of geography of the County including major streets and landmarks.

 

Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures.

 

Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations and safe operation of heavy equipment.

 

Expert knowledge of and skill in operating various types of heavy equipment.                            

 

Ability to take and follow directions from supervisor.  Ability to give directions to and gain compliance from assigned staff.

 

Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.

 

Ability to lift objects of up to 50 pounds.

 

ADA Minimum Requirements:

 

Physical Ability:  Tasks require the ability to exert physical effort in strenuous and routine work which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate to heavy weight (25-100) pounds.  Duties require the ability to operate a motor vehicle and various hand tools. 

 

Sensory Ability:  Tasks require the ability to communicate orally. 

 

Environmental Factors:  Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather.
