CITY OF COMMERCE, GEORGIA

The City of Commerce, Georgia seeks applications for the position of City Manager.

The City Manager is the chief administrative officer of the city of Commerce and provides direct oversight of seven departments: Public Safety, Main Street, Library, Water/Wastewater, Electric, Natural Gas, Finance/Administration, Recreation and City Clerk. The City Manager reports to the City Council and is responsible for a $70 million budget and 83 employees. 

The City of Commerce is located approximately one hour northeast of Atlanta on Interstate 85 and a half hour north of Athens, home of Georgia’s largest state university, in Jackson County. The county has enjoyed significant population growth to a now estimated population of 82,000. The city is governed by an elected mayor an elected mayor pro-tem and five council members. Commerce is a National Main Street City and its city school system is highly rated. Multiple public institutions of higher learning are located nearby. The beautiful region around Commerce abounds in recreational opportunities.

The successful candidate should possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning. Ten years of progressive experience in city management is desired. In addition, the successful candidate will present strong leadership and communication skills (both oral and written), a capacity to work in the political environment, financial management ability (including trend assessment and forecasting), a working knowledge of financial statements, and direct experience working with elected officials. An ability to collaborate with regional partners is also required. Excellent interpersonal skills and a passion for customer service are essential. The salary range for this position is $130,000 to $180,000, dependent on qualifications.
