Created in 1933, the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) is the only state organization that represents municipal governments in Georgia. Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, educational, employee benefit and technical consulting services to its members.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this position is to maintain accounting records and prepare timely financial reports for assigned funds in accordance with departmental policies and procedures and generally accepted accounting principles.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary responsibility is the preparation of financial statements and supporting schedules each month, while meeting scheduled deadlines.

Facilitates and completes monthly close procedures.

Prepares and records asset, liability, revenue, and expenses entries by compiling and analyzing account information.

Prepares journal entries; makes necessary adjustments and corrections; enters journal entries into automated financial management system.

Records, reviews and verifies investment activity, and other financial transactions in general ledgers.

Prepares accounting supporting schedules and monthly financial statements.

Assists with analyzing financial statements monthly, reporting and explaining any variances.

Assists with annual financial audits and monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting requirements.

Maintains and balances subsidiary accounts and systems by verifying, allocating, posting, and reconciling transactions; resolving discrepancies as they arise.

Reconciles and accrues fees and income transactions to proper accounts; calculates accruals.

Reconciles bank and investment statements to General Ledger.

Retrieves, reviews, adjusts or corrects accounting batches.

References investment reports, bank statements, invoices, accounts payable and receivable transactions, checks, journal entries, trial balances, general ledgers, financial reports and other data and information.

Assists with special requests and projects for various funds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field required; two years of experience in financial accounting or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
