JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for ensuring the certification, recertification, and continuing education for all members of the Department.

MAJOR DUTIES

  1. Conducts and organizes departmental fire training. 
  2. Maintains all fire training records on all employees.
  3. Supervises Field Training Officers and evaluates training of new employees.
  4. Registers staff for outer agency fire training.
  5. Reports all training to certifying agencies annually.
  6. Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  1. Knowledge of multiple computer systems, as well as software within the department.
  2. Knowledge of the registration processes for other agencies, schools, etc.
  3. Knowledge of everyone’s level of distinction as well as learning styles.
  4. Knowledge of computers and job related software.
  5. Skill in interpersonal relations.
  6. Skill in oral and written communication.
  7. Skill in understanding or teaching prerequisites for classes outside of the agency. 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The supervisor assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include OCGA Title 25, NFPA 1403: Standard on Live Fire Training Evolutions, NFPA 1401: Recommended Practices for Fire Service Training and Records, State and National Scope of Practices for all Department members levels, Monroe County Board of Commissioners Employee Manual. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.    

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related administrative and training duties. Managing schedules and organizing training contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position to ensure the certification, recertification, and continuing of education for all members of the Department. Success in this position contributes to public safety of the citizens of Monroe County.  

 

CONTACTS                                                      

  • Contacts are typically with Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, Battalion Chief, Captains, Firefighter/EMTs, Paramedics, GA Firefighter Standards and Training Council, Georgia Fire Academy.  
  • Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, and to motivate persons.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk and intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and grease, machinery with moving parts and contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires use of protective devices such a masks, goggles, and gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has functional supervision over assigned personnel within an area, department, or unit. Functional supervision typically involves the ability to assign, coordinate, and review quality and quantity of work of other employees. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field preferred.
  • More than five years of related experience required.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.
  • NPQ Fire Instructor II
  • Live Fire Instructor
  • NPQ Firefighter level II
  • AEMT or Equivalent
