Job Title: Staff Accountant

General Statement
Under the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer, this position performs accounts functions in support of the city’s financial operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Processes payroll, audits time entries and runs checks.
- Complete payroll taxes and fringe benefits accounts.
- Processes accounts payable, audits invoices and runs checks, reconciles credit cards, processes contract draws, audits fuel invoices and processes purchase orders.
- Maintain updated vendor files and W9s; generate and administer 1099s
- Reconciles bank accounts.
- Provides information and answers questions from other departments regarding purchasing.
- Monitors budget for overages; processes budget transfers as needed.
- Assists with audit preparation.
- Reconciles health insurance and payroll deductions.
- Makes journal entries to adjust expenditures and General Ledger accounts.
- Issues credit cards, fuel cards, completes credit applications with new vendors.
- Maintain files and records in accordance with retention policies.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Undergraduate Degree in a course of related study is preferred.
- Possesses valid Georgia driver’s license.
- Strong and Effective Customer Service Skills
- Intermediate Microsoft Suite Proficiency
- Strong reading and written/verbal/ e-mail communication skills
- Accuracy and attention to detail in all work areas, including cash receipts and monetary transactions.
Physical Demands
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.

- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Knowledge of Governmental Account Standards Board (GASB) guidelines.
- Knowledge of auditing principles.
- Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws, city ordinances, and department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of IRS guidelines.
- Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
