Position: Public Works Director

The City of Emerson is currently accepting applications for a full-time Public Works Director. This position involves planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the public works department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee drinking water utility, sanitary sewer utility, sanitation collection, streets, stormwater system, parks, vehicle maintenance, and building maintenance.
  • Manage and submit reports to regulatory agencies.
  • Plan and manage departmental budgets and comply with purchasing policies.
  • Inspect contracted work performed 
  • conduct performance evaluations.
  • Assist with GIS, zoning, and land use permits.
  • Work outdoors in various climates including heat, cold, rain, and snow.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong management skills.
  • Familiarity with water and wastewater treatment facilities, street repairs, building maintenance, parks, rights of way, and inspections.
  • Knowledge of construction materials, procedures, tools, equipment, and safety precautions.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently.
  • Physical ability to bend, stoop, walk on uneven terrain, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree, or the equivalent, in engineering, vocational, or technical training in construction or related fields.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.


  • Starting salary: $52,000 - $75,000 (dependent upon experience).
