Shift:7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, M-F, On Call As Needed

Salary: Competitive, Negotiable Upon Experience

 

Job Summary:

The City of Sparta is seeking a dedicated and skilled Water and Sewer Crew Lead Operator to join our team. This role involves leading a crew in the repair, operation, maintenance, and installation of Water and Sewer Utility assets.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruct personnel in policies and procedures.
  • Maintain records of inspection data.
  • Operate utility locator machines and collect samples.
  • Locate water and sewer lines for crews and utility companies.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, and sewer rodding machines.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Inspect and replace chemicals at groundwater wells.
  • Conduct daily inspections of sewage stations.
  • Manage customer service calls, including water turn on and disconnects.
  • Supervise monthly meter readings.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Familiarity with regulations and technology in water treatment and distribution.
  • Knowledge of materials and methods used in public utilities construction and maintenance.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize work efficiently.
  • Competence in supervising and evaluating staff performance.
  • Capability to interpret and enforce laws, regulations, and policies related to utility services.

 

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • The job requires heavy physical work, including exerting up to 50 pounds of force.
  • Tasks involve stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting moderate weights.
  • Work is primarily outdoors with moderate to high noise levels and occasional indoor tasks.
  • Some travel required for training and duties.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in water, wastewater, and/or stormwater systems.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Possession of a Water Distribution License, Water Operator License, Collections License, and/or Wastewater Operator License preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a Water Distribution System Operator License and Wastewater Collection System Operator within 12 months.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Must pass a background check and pre-employment alcohol and controlled substance testing.
  • Subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing due to the safety-sensitive nature of the position.
