JOB SUMMARY
This supervisory position is responsible for responding to emergency calls to suppress fires, stabilize incidents, conserve property and preserve lives, while managing the assigned crew, and the day to day operations of the fire department on an assigned shift.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Responds to emergency situations and in cases of fire; coordinates fire suppression and emergency response activities on the scene.
- Supervises and assists fighting structural fires, providing search and rescue services, extrications, hazardous materials management, and emergency medical care.
- Prepares incident reports and other reports.
- Supervises the day to day operation of the fire station; cleans and maintains fire station.
- Inspects, tests, and repairs fire equipment, protective gear, and fire apparatus.
- Assists in supervising and evaluating performance of department personnel.
- Assists in developing fire pre-plans.
- Maintains City fire hydrants annually.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of federal, state and local fire codes and ordinances.
- Knowledge of fire behavior.
- Knowledge of fire suppression practices, tactics, and safety techniques.
- Knowledge of first responder principles and applications.
- Knowledge of hazardous materials management.
- Knowledge of computers and job related software programs.
- Skill in the use of light and heavy specialized firefighting equipment.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in interpersonal communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Captain, under the direction of the Fire Chief, manages the day to day operation of the fire station, on an assigned shift. The Captain is responsible for the firefighters assigned to his/her shift, and auxiliary personnel that may respond to calls or training.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include City policies and procedures, department standard operating procedures, and applicable state and federal laws and codes. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related firefighting/emergency response duties. The necessity of responding to potentially dangerous situations contributes to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to prevent and suppress fires and respond to emergency calls. Successful performance ensures the protection of life, property, and public safety.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with coworkers, other City employees and agencies, and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to provide services; to give or exchange information; or to resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office and occasionally at emergency scenes and outdoors in cold and inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, contagious or infectious diseases, and extremely high heat and smoke conditions. The work requires the use of specialized equipment and protective devices.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over assigned firefighters and auxiliary personnel, who respond to calls and/or training.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
- Possession of or valid Class “F” driver’s license.
- Certified State of Georgia Firefighter.
- Be a certified EMT-B, at a minimal.
- Five (5) years of firefighting experience, with supervisory and administrative duties
