Code Enforcement Officer

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the enforcement of local codes and ordinances.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:          

  • Conduct routine and complaint-based inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial properties to ensure compliance with local codes and ordinances.
  • Investigate reports of code violations, document findings, and take appropriate enforcement actions.
  • Issue notices of violation, citations, and other enforcement documents as necessary.
  • Work with property owners, tenants, and contractors to resolve code violations and achieve compliance.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, violations, and enforcement actions.
  • Prepare and present cases for administrative hearings or court proceedings as required.
  • Provide excellent customer service by responding to inquiries and complaints from the public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Collaborate with other city departments and agencies to address code enforcement issues.
  • Stay informed about changes in local, state, and federal regulations related to code enforcement.
  • Performs other assigned duties.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Two (2) years of experience in a related field;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; 
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain the appropriate state certification for the type of inspection(s) conducted; and
  • Valid State of Georgia Driver’s License.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of city ordinances, and regulations;
  • Knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations;
  • Knowledge of records management principles;
  • Knowledge of modern office principles and practices;
  • Knowledge of standard safe work practices;
  • Skill in the use of computer and job-related software programs;
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions;
  • Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports;
  • Skill in oral and written communication;
  • Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations; and
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with City officials, other employees, and the general public.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, or stooping.  The employee occasionally lifts light objects, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:     

Work is typically performed both indoors and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and machinery with moving parts.  The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
