Job Summary:  This position is responsible for operating equipment at the county landfill.

 

Major Duties:

• Operates a compactor and dozer to push, compact and cover solid waste at the landfill.
• Operates various heavy equipment as needed, including a bulldozer, motor-grader, front-end loader, pan, tractor, and water truck.
• Operates a track dozer to dig and move dirt.
• Sort’s recyclables; hauls materials to nearby markets.
• Fuel equipment and performs routine preventive maintenance such as lubricating and changing oil and filters.
• Operates lawn mower and weed eater to perform ground maintenance duties.
• Performs general laboring duties as needed, including pumping water, building silt fences, picking up debris, and cleaning silt pond.
• Performs daily maintenance and basic operations at the water treatment plant.
• Cleans recycling area.
• Operates scales as necessary.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of EPA and EPD guidelines pertaining to landfill operations.
• Knowledge of county and departmental safety rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of techniques for compacting trash and achieving proper slope and grade at landfill sites.
• Skill in operating such heavy equipment as a compactor and dozer, motor-grader, pan, water truck, and tractor.
• Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations.
• Skill in dealing with the public.
• Skills in oral and written communication.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia.

 

The successful candidate must complete a Background/Reference Check and Pre-Employment Drug Screening prior to the start of employment.
