WATER PLANT DEPARTMENT

JOB TITLE:     Water Plant Operator

REPORTS TO:     Water Plant Supervisor

DEFINITION:

This is a skilled full-time position performing work in the Water Plant Department under the administration of the Water Plant Supervisor.  This position will perform required work for the Water Plant; and will perform other related work as required.

Essential Job Functions:

  • The operational and technical tasks of the water treatment facility to assure the production of safe and potable water by the water plant.
  • Start and stop pumps to insure proper operational requirements.
  • Adjust chemical dosages to insure optimum environmental requirements.
  • Addition of chemicals into appropriate storage compartments for proper water treatment.  Amounts and specific chemicals depending on chemical demand.
  • Collect specific water quality samples for regulatory testing.  This includes but not limited to the necessary packaging and processing to regulatory agencies.
  • Perform necessary water laboratory tests as required by state and federal regulations.  These may be at two hour, less than 4-hour, daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly increments depending on plant operation and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide assistance in the compounding of various standard solutions used in the testing process.
  • Provide assistance in the compounding of various standard solutions used in the regulatory tests.
  • Perform daily calibration of laboratory equipment and making notations on equipment report.
  • Provide assistance in the collection of calibration related paperwork for filing in designated areas.
  • Perform manual “draw downs” on water treatment equipment to insure accurate performance.
  • Perform necessary cleaning of water quality instrumentation and making notations on daily paperwork.
  • Perform the backwashing of filters for proper turbidity standards and making notations on daily paperwork.
  • Monitor the overall plant conditions with the available SCADA system.
  • Monitor water storage tanks elevation conditions.
  • Provide assistance in the scheduled cleaning of the flocculation/coagulation basins.
  • Provide assistance in the tabulation and verification of the daily report for the monthly state report submission.
  • Provide assistance in the quarterly collection of daily charts for regulatory verification.
  • Provide assistance in the creation and documentation of charts, plant flows, and records.
  • Provide assistance in the composite collection of daily use waste for the weekly collection and disposal.
  • Answering customer related water problem telephone calls and reporting these conditions when necessary to appropriate personnel.
  • Provide assistance in the emergency/scheduled shift coverage for continuous plant operation.
  • Perform necessary custodial duties to maintain an acceptable plant appearance and conditions.
  • Providing assistance in maintaining, cleaning, and alternate operation of plant equipment to insure efficiency and flexibility.
  • Physical observation and adjustments of plant equipment and open line areas to maintain adequate flow requirements.
  • Attend various classes, conferences, seminars, symposiums, or informational meetings to receive and achieve updates on regulatory and certification issues.
  • Other duties not necessarily specified but needed as the occasion rises.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High School diploma or GED preferred; education may be waived by work experience
  • Must possess a valid State of Georgia driver’s license
  • Must have legal authorization to work within the United States of America
  • Must be able to report for work on time and to perform the duties of the job for the entire workday
  • Must be able to work flexible hours with some weekend and holiday work required
  • Must be able to perform frequent overtime work, which may involve late night or early morning hours
  • Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds; and to repeatedly lift, move and carry objects weighing more than 100 pounds with assistance
  • Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and to effectively communicate with the public
  • Must have the ability to use good judgment while performing job related tasks
  • Ability to obtain water treatment Class III license within 12 months.
