JOB SUMMARY

 

The Geographic Information System Technician is responsible for the production of data layers, maps, tables, or reports, using spatial analysis procedures or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, equipment, or systems.

 

MAJOR DUTIES

 

  • Assists staff in the use of GIS software and the use of custom GIS web-applications

 

  • Defines GIS product needs per request, works with supervisor or requestor to ensure compliance with identified need. Utilizes appropriate application to develop and prepare the GIS product using GIS Cartographic Standards for mapping projects, and department standards for tabular products. Plots or exports product to digital files as appropriate; documents and archives projects

 

  • Produce data layers, maps, tables, or reports, using spatial analysis procedures or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, equipment, or systems

 

  • Conducts research and provides recommendations on modifying procedures and developing workable solutions for managing GIS data problems.

 

  • Provides specialized GIS customer service. Coordinates requests from internal and external customers over the phone and in person for maps and other materials; tracks activity per adopted procedures

 

  • Field Data Collection as assigned

 

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

 

  • Performs other work as required or when directed by administration.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

           

  • Knowledge in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) particularly Esriā„¢ Products
    • Including ArcPro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Drone2Map

 

  • Knowledge of mapping techniques

 

  • Knowledge of spatial data principles, coordinate systems, and map projections

 

  • Knowledge of computer operating systems and software applications

 

  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures

 

  • Knowledge of GPS applications and functions

 

  • Skill in Microsoft Office suite of programs

 

  • Skill in maintaining and organizing data sets

 

  • Skill in mathematical principals in the areas of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry

 

  • Skill in operating such office equipment as a personal computer, copier

 

  • Skill in overall customer service

 

  • Skill in oral and written communication

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

 

GIS Manager assigns work in terms of general instruction.  Completed work may be spot-checked for accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results.

 

GUIDELINES

 

Guidelines include the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, county and department policies and procedures, state Department of Revenue regulations, and standard computer-assisted drafting techniques.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application as needed.

 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

 

Under general supervision, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician performs a variety of technical duties including data collection, data analysis, and data output tasks of moderate difficulty, related, but not limited to the utilities, Capital Improvement Projects, residential, public, or commercial parcels.  Additionally, the GIS Technician is also expected to perform field data collection.

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, taxpayers, attorneys, surveyors, real estate agents, and the general public.

 

  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, or provide services.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects and climbs ladders.

 

  • The work is typically performed in an office.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

 

None.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Previous work in an Assessors Office preferred, but not required.

 

  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
