The City of Fort Valley is seeking a qualified professional for the position of Public Works Director. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the overall operation of the Public Works Department, including streets, parks, cemeteries, and building maintenance, solid waste collection, grass, right-of-way maintenance, and the upkeep of the City’s entire fleet of vehicles. In consultation with the City Administrator, the Public Works Director will develop long-term and short-term plans for the department, supervise personnel and budget, and manage public works construction projects for the City.

About Fort Valley

The City of Fort Valley was established in 1856 and serves as the County seat of Peach County. With a population of 8,780, Fort Valley has long been known as the Peach Capitol of the World and is the center of Georgia's largest peach-producing area. Home to Fort Valley State University and the American Camellia Society, Fort Valley is also the birthplace of and corporate home to the Blue Bird Corp., one of the nation's largest manufacturers of school buses.

About the Public Works Department

The total public works operating budget is $1.2 million annually. There are 54 full-time positions across all functional areas of the department.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications and experience with a range of $65,000-$75,000. The City offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, and life insurance along with a retirement plan.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified applicants should possess a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of eight (8) years of work experience in a related field, including three (3) years of increasingly responsible supervisory experience in public works or a related field, or an equivalent amount of education and experience to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the city government. An associate’s degree from an accredited college/university in a related course of study is preferred. The applicant must possess or have the ability to readily obtain a valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Georgia and a Commercial Driver’s License.
