Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, or GED
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations
  • Possession or the ability to obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia
  • Knowledge of basic safety policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of defensive driving techniques
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather, and while exposed to noise, dust, dirt, water, and grease.
  • Ability to lift light and heavy objects, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
  • Ability to perform duties while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.
  • Skilled in operations and maintenance of such equipment as a backhoe, tractor, bush hog, mule, and dump truck
  • Skill in using such tools as shovel, chainsaw, riding mower, weed eater, etc.
  • Pre-employment screening consists of a criminal background check and drug testing.

Role and Responsibilities

Street Maintenance:

  • Mows grass on all city properties to include water tower, water tanks, lift pumps, wastewater plant, City Park, cemetery, all right of ways on the roads and beauty strips within the city.
  • Weed eat vegetation the mower is unable to reach around all poles and signs.
  • Trim, clean and clear debris/brush off fences, sewer easements and overgrown curbs.
  • Repairs, replace and install street signs except on the state right of way.
  • Repairs or patch potholes, trims limbs and clears right of way as needed.
  • Collects leaves, brush, trash and limbs from streets and roadways as needed.
  • Empty city trash receptacles within the city as needed.

Water/Utilities:

  • Performs duties of Water/Sewer Pollution Control Operator as required.
  • Completes daily observation checks of water lines and wastewater plants.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains water and sewer lines as needed.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains water meters of 3/4” to 6” service lines and 8“mains with or without the water flowing as needed.
  • Reads numerical numbers and records reading on the meter sheets provided monthly by the Utility Clerk.
  • Completes abnormal meter readings on meter sheets provided monthly by the Utility Clerk.
  • Connects and disconnects meters as needed.
  • Locates and flags water and sewer lines as needed.

General:

  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the material commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities related to assigned areas.
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the water and sewer division. Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans, and flushes water mains, pipe, valves, and fittings on the repair of mains and services and installation of services; assists in shutting off broken sections of water mains. Repairs and maintains City sewer lines and landscapes.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use. Perform preventative maintenance of department small engines and equipment as needed.
  • Responds to routine requests for information from officials, employers, members of staff, the public or other individuals.
  • Skill in the operation, maintenance, and routine repair of equipment used in the Public Works Department, Water and Sewer Division construction and maintenance.
  • Drives trucks of diverse sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, and sand. 
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to one hundred (100) pounds, standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day, climbing poles, bending, crouching, or stooping, and using tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguish between shades of color.
  • Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment, such as jackhammers, tampers, drills, saws, mini excavator, backhoe.
  • Provides list of supplies needed to the City Clerk
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability to represent the City of Warm Springs
