Part-Time and Fulltime Firefighter
JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for performing operations involving fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue emergencies and other manmade and natural emergencies.
MAJOR DUTIES:
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
This position reports to the shift Lieutenant and works as a team member to accomplish goals set by the Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Chief.
GUIDELINES:
Guidelines include relevant state and federal laws and regulations, city ordinances, standard building codes, standard operating procedures, and guidelines, along with city and departmental rules and regulations. The department operates (2) 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week. Must be willing to work a minimum of (4) 12 hour shifts a month, if hired prior to 5/1/2024 and 6 (12) hours shifts per month if hired after 5/1/2024.
COMPLEXITY:
The work consists of varied physical and technical duties. The variety of potential emergency situations contributes to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT:
The purpose of this position is to perform the day-to-day operations of fire protection services to the city and surrounding areas. Successful performance helps ensure the protection of life and property, contributes to the wellbeing of city and county residents, and lowers insurance rates for property owners.
PERSONAL CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with coworkers, medical providers, other emergency services personnel, law enforcement officers, elected officials, members of local civic groups and organizations, business owners/employees and the public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:
Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, motivate employees, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is typically performed standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping and some functions at a desk. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or power equipment, uses ropes, requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and stands for prolonged periods and may be exposed to serious life safety hazards.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors at fire and emergency scenes, where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious disease, irritating chemicals, hazardous materials, inclement weather, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, cold water, collapsing structures and features, and roadway traffic. The work requires the use of protective devices and equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus. This work also requires working at heights over 24 feet, and in and around potentially fast-moving water hazards.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:
May be required to fill in as acting officer in charge as needed.
HIRING PROCESS:
Completed application submitted, written test, interview with command staff, drug screening and other testing as determined. If offered the position, the candidate will be on a 6-month probation to evaluate his/her work. The incumbent will be required to successfully drive and pump a fire engine in emergency mode within 90 days. The incumbent will be required to successfully drive, pump and operate a ladder truck with 180 days of hire.
