JOB TITLE:  Refuse Collection/Driver
DEPARTMENT:  Public Works, City of Cartersville

JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for driving a refuse truck along a residential route to collect refuse within the City of Cartersville.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Inspects the truck prior to leaving on route to ensure that it is properly cleaned, serviced and equipped.
  • Drives a refuse truck along a predetermined residential route to collect refuse; transfers refuse to landfill.
  • Empties refuse into truck.
  • Operates a two-way radio.
  • Performs minor preventative maintenance and repairs on the truck, such as checking air pressure, brakes, lights, belts, and fluid levels; cleans and washes truck; informs supervisor of vehicle repair needs.
  • Assists other department crews and drivers with leaf and limb removal duties, as needed.
  • Collects discarded items, yard waste, and junk from curbsides and streets.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of the geographic layout of the city.
  • Knowledge of residential refuse collection routes.
  • Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the operation of the truck and related equipment.
  • Skill in defensive driving techniques.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Solid Waste Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and property of the final results. 

GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include state traffic laws, departmental safety rules and regulations, city ordinances and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of related duties in driving a truck to collect refuse.

SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to drive a truck along routes to collect refuse. Successful performance in this positions helps ensures a clean environment and provides a timely service to the general public.

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to exchange information and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  This work is typically performed while sitting for an extended length of time with intermittent standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is performed in a truck and outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather.  The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
