JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for performing unskilled and semi-skilled duties necessary for the accomplishment of various street maintenance and repair projects. This position is also responsible for routine maintenance of the City’s water features located in the park. This position receives daily assignments through the Lead Street Attendant who, in turn reports to the Public Works Manager. 

 JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs routine street maintenance duties, including grass mowing, leaf and limb removal from roadsides, and street upkeep and repair.

  • Supervises inmate and community service workers as needed.
  • Communicates with the public in a professional manager while performing field work. 
  • Operates a weed-eater and blower to edge city sidewalks and curbs.
  • Picks up litter from roadsides; operates woodchipper.
  • Assists with pouring, spreading, and leveling asphalt, concrete, and gravel. 
  • Washes and cleans city vehicles.
  • Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, and other street construction and maintenance materials.
  • Operates trucks and construction equipment as directed; makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Fills and repairs road shoulders; participates in cleaning, constructing, and maintaining drainage ditches.
  • Rakes leaves and grass.
  • Replaces street signs.
  • Performs general housekeeping duties at department office and other city buildings.
  • Performs routine maintenance of equipment, including washing, checking fluid levels, and lubricating.
  • Directs traffic as needed.
  • Performs routine water treatment of the City’s splash pad and fountain.  
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of safety procedures pertaining to street maintenance. 
  • Knowledge of city policies and procedures relating to assigned tasks.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and office equipment.
  • Knowledge of pool maintenance as it relates to application of chemicals necessary to maintain safe water conditions at the City Park (i.e., splash pad and fountain). 
  • Skill in operating street and grounds maintenance tools and equipment, including street sweeper, backhoe, and tractors.  
  • Skill in the use of such tools as chain saws, jack hammers, woodchippers, truck, mowers, and various hand tools.
  • Skill in basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and landscaping techniques.
  • Skill in the application of chemicals to maintain safe water conditions at the City splash pad and fountain.
  • Skill in following instructions.
  • Skill in effective communication techniques.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is typically performed outdoors.   The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, chemicals, machinery with moving parts and occasional inclement weather.  The work requires the use of safety devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.

The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.  The employee lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

Qualifications

Ability to ready, write and perform basic mathematical calculations. Certified Pool Operator or the ability to obtain certification within two (2) years. Valid Georgia Driver’s License. Must provide a satisfactory driver's history report from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Criminal history background check required.
