Effective, October 1, 2024, newly hired Deputy Sheriff and Sheriff Corporals will receive a $10,000 hiring incentive (if eligible).
 

Lateral entry rank and starting base salary depend on prior law enforcement experience. Documented satisfactory job performance is required to qualify for the incremental incentive payments of $3,000 after completion of 3 months of service; $3,000 after completion of 6 months of service; and $4,000 after completion of 12 months of service for a total of $10,000. This amount is not added to the base salary. This program is collaboratively funded by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget (OPB), Public Safety and Community Violence Reduction (PSCVR) Grant and the Athens-Clarke County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). Continuation of this Recruitment/Hiring Incentive Program is subject to continued availability of grant funding, CCSO funding, and approval by the Manager.

REPORTS TO: Shift Supervisor or Sergeant
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
CLASSIFICATION: Personnel System; Requires satisfactory completion of a twelve month probationary period.
PAY GRADE: SO2 $50,575 - $68,424
SAFETY SENSITIVE: Yes; Subject to random drug testing per the Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.

Purpose of Job 
The purpose of this job is to preserve the peace and enforces the laws of the State of Georgia. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, protecting life and property, enforcing state laws, maintaining jail security, serving warrants and civil papers, providing courthouse and courtroom security, transporting prisoners, performing necessary functions to ensure safety and well-being of inmates, employees and visitors. It is a demanding position, and when assigned to the jail it requires a heightened state of readiness at all times.
 
Job Related Requirements 
WORK SCHEDULE:  Twelve (12) hour shift from 7:45-7:45 will be assigned permanently to days or nights. Shift assignments are made at the discretion of the Sheriff or his designee. Weekends and holidays are included and overtime is required from time to time. 

May be required to work on religious holidays.
 
Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Must work cooperatively with others.

When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.
 
Emergency Position: 
This position is designated as an emergency position that requires your attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions. Some examples of emergencies include inclement weather, utility failure, fire or other forced evacuations or as determined by the Manager or safe and effective operation of the jail. 

Minimum Training & Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

High school diploma or equivalent required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. 

Must be a United States Citizen.
 
Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must possess current POST certification as set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act/Peace Officer's Standards and Training Act. 

Must qualify and requalify with service weapon(s) semiannually upon obtaining peace officer certification. 

Valid Driver's License required.

Must complete GCIC Security and Awareness training within 10 days of hire.

Must obtain certification in First Aid and CPR within 3 months of hire.
    
Must complete Basic Jail Certification Course within 6 months of hire.

When assigned to driving the bus to transport inmates:  Must possess a Class A or B CDL with passenger endorsement.

When assigned to the Jail Section:  Must complete the core module requirements of the jail training program within 2 months of assignment. When assigned to the Field Section, must complete the court training program or field training program within 3 months of assignment.

Previous law enforcement or corrections experience preferred. 

Sheriff Corporal Only:  Two years law enforcement or related experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
