Fire Lieutenant
JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for managing, supervising the work of personnel involved in fire suppression, emergency medical, rescue emergencies and other manmade and natural emergencies. The position is also responsible for performing work involving fire suppression, emergency medical, rescue emergencies and other manmade or natural emergencies.
MAJOR DUTIES:
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
The Chief or Assistant Chief assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES:
Guidelines include relevant state and federal laws and regulations, city ordinances, standard building codes, standard operating procedures, and guidelines, along with city and departmental rules and regulations. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. Must be capable of making appropriate decisions in a rapid manner.
COMPLEXITY:
The work consists of varied supervisory and technical duties. The variety of potential emergency situations contributes to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT:
The purpose of this position is to effectively manage the day-to-day operations of fire protection services to the city and surrounding areas. Successful performance helps ensure the protection of life and property, contributes to the wellbeing of city and county residents, and lowers insurance rates for property owners.
PERSONAL CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with coworkers, medical providers, other emergency services personnel, law enforcement officers, elected officials, members of local civic groups and organizations, business owners/employees and the public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:
Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, motivate employees, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses power tools or equipment, uses ropes, requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, stands for prolonged periods and may be exposed to serious life safety hazards.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors at fire and emergency scenes, where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious disease, irritating chemicals, hazardous materials, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, cold water, collapsing structures and features, confined spaces. The work requires the use of protective devices and equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus. This work also requires working at heights over 24 feet, in and around potentially fast-moving water.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:
The position has direct supervision over personnel on an assigned shift and daily operational tasks.
HIRING PROCESS:
Completed application submitted, written test, interview with command staff, drug screening and other testing as determined. If offered the position, the candidate will be on a 6-month probation to evaluate his/her work. The incumbent must already be capable of driving and operating fire engines and ladder trucks and have the proper drivers license required to drive fire apparatus
