DEPARTMENT: Sheriff’s Office, Uniform Patrol
ENTRY SALARY: $22.07 per hour, plus benefits
JOB SUMMARY: This position performs police work involving the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws, and the investigation of crime. An incumbent in this position may be give special duty assignments. Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; collects required information and prepares necessary reports; performs preliminary investigations of crime and traffic accidents; enforces laws; performs fugitive and criminal apprehension and preventative control duties; prepares and/or serves various legal and civil documents and papers; testifies at local, state, and federal court proceedings. Responds to patrol zone assignments; monitors traffic for violations; enforces local, state, and federal laws; responds to calls for assistance; maintains order and public safety; apprehends and arrests suspected violators and criminal suspects; responds to traffic accidents and incidents; collects evidence and participates in investigative operations; transports prisoners and mental patients. Participates as part of a security team for government facilities and court rooms. Performs routine vehicle maintenance and repair activities; diagnoses and repairs emergency equipment; monitors vehicle operation for proper working order to ensure safety; maintains maintenance records. Serves as a School Resource Officer as assigned; provides security at local schools; conducts community awareness and youth drug awareness programs; coordinates mentoring programs; performs investigations of juvenile crimes. Participates in special court programs requiring residence checks and supervision of sexual predators, repeat drug offenders, and at-risk mental health patients. Operates various types of emergency vehicles, weapons systems, restraint equipment, and assigned technology. Operates records management system; updates databases; completes complex reports; inventories and logs evidence. Performs related duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.
