RECREATION PROGRAM COORDINATOR

POSITION SUMMARY     

Under the general direction of the Recreation Program Manager, the employee will perform a variety of duties associated with creating and providing support to Parks and Recreation to include but not limited to recreational programming, camps, classes and programming events. The employee will be responsible for training and supervising all seasonal and volunteer staff of recreational programs.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Make recommendations and assist in the preparation of the department budget
  • Plans, implements, directs and evaluates all recreation activities and programs as well as educational and instructional activities
  • Prioritize job tasks and complete them within specified time frames meeting strict deadlines
  • Develop schedules, curriculum, staffing, purchasing and transportation needed to facilitate out-of-school time activities
  • Works independently and oversee activities at designated locations such as parks, school facilities, baseball/softball fields and other public facilities
  • Works with independent contractors and instructors to facilitate recreation programming and activities for all ages. 
  • Assists in recruiting, training, supervising, directing, and evaluating seasonal staff, instructors, volunteers, and participants
  • Enforces City policies, procedures and park rules for staff, instructors, volunteers, and contracted facility renters as well as enforcements of all safety procedures
  • Maintains an effective working relationship with all City personnel, state agencies, participants, school officials and instructors
  • Ensures adherence to all State Board of Health certifications for camps and affiliates
  • Consults with others on complex problem situations and provides technical expertise.
  • Provides progress and activity reports to senior management; and assists with the revision of procedure manuals as appropriate.
  • Performs related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Leisure Services Administration or closely related field. Three (3) years of progressively responsible related experience and/or training; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia’s driver license.  Certification in basic first aid/CPR/AED, and certification as a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) are preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles, rules, and procedures of out-of-school time programming and goals and objectives of public recreation programs.
  • Knowledge in the principles of supervision, organization, administration, maintenance, and operation of recreation facility.
  •  Ability to communicate orally and in writing with staff members and/or supervisors and have working knowledge of appropriate technology in order to best serve the public and manage programs. 
  • Ability to understand, follow and complete oral and/or written directions. 
  • Ability to know how to provide a variety of revenue-based programs in the areas of general recreation programs, classes, program events and instructional classes. 
  • Ability to follow and maintain a budget. 
  • Ability to communicate and establish rapport, understanding and confidence with participants and the public; exercise independent judgment in the application of program rules and procedures; plan, promote, organize, and coordinate out-of-school activities and events; and be a team player in the organization.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel and crouch.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office and outdoors.  Exposure to all types of weather and will work around light and heavy equipment.
  • The employee regularly works in a normal office environment.
  • The employee may perform some duties outdoors while conducting official business which will require limited local travel.

May work an adjusted schedule for assisting in events occurring after 5:00 p.m. such as meetings, programs, or planned events.
