The purpose of this classification is to The purpose of this classification is to protect and serve the citizens of Ben Hill County and to enforce state laws and county ordinances.  Duties vary based on employee assignments and may include uniform patrol duty, traffic enforcement, court services, code enforcement, and/or D.A.R.E. office duties. The position is assigned to Uniform Patrol Section in the Sheriff’s Office. The candidates for this position will interview with selected staff members from the Divisions at BHSO.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Patrols the County to enforce criminal and traffic laws and ordinances and to protect life and property and perform security checks of business and residential areas for signs of criminal activity. 

Serve as first-responder to provide aid and assistance to victims at scene of emergency; assists fire and emergency medical services personnel in treating and transporting victims.

Answers dispatched calls and responds to emergencies, disturbances, accidents, alarms, and complaints.

Completes and issues citations and notices.

Searches for, apprehends and arrests suspects; and transports prisoners to county jail.

Serve civil papers, subpoenas and warrants.

Complete incident reports, vehicle accident reports, witness statements, arrest and booking reports, fingerprint cards, bond forms, juvenile complaint forms, traffic regulation forms, and other standard public safety documents.

References state traffic, civil and criminal code manuals; county ordinances; department operating procedures and other laws and policies to perform assigned job duties.

Review road maps; criminal and driver’s history inquiries; incident and supplemental reports; arrest and booking forms; medical and crime lab reports; photographs; warrants and other legal documents; and other materials in performing assigned job duties.

Assists motorists and the general public and escorts funeral processions.

Provide assistance in criminal investigations by performing duties such as conducting drug surveillance work, securing and protecting crime scenes, and conducting investigations and interviews.

Enforces local, federal and state laws relating to public safety and welfare; performs duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations and standards of safety.

Provides security during court proceedings; and, when necessary, provides for the security of jurors, judges and staff.

Escorts and transports prisoners and mental health patients as required.

Assist the public with information.

Prepares and submits detailed work records and reports.

Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles.

Participates in public relations efforts as necessary to maintain a cooperative and positive relationship between the Sheriff’s Office and the community.

Receives and responds to citizens’ inquiries, concerns and complaints concerning law enforcement activities.

Attends periodic training sessions and attends meetings to keep abreast of current law enforcement and security trends, technology and legislation; required level of proficiency in the use of firearms.

Remains on call as needed/scheduled.

Performs general clerical work as required including, but not limited to, maintaining logs, preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.

Punctuality and attendance are essential.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or GED required, associate’s degree in criminal justice preferred, two years of experience in law enforcement preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Candidates with previous supervisory experience is preferred. Must be a certified peace officer with the State of Georgia. Must complete P.O.S.T. -approved continuing education on an annual basis as mandated by state law. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License.
