Sumter Local Government Consulting is assisting the City of College Park in recruiting for a Chief Building Official.  The Chief Building Official is responsible for plan review and state required inspections of new construction and renovations in the City of College Park.  The position reports to the City Manager and is a critical member of the City’s executive leadership team.

A well-established community with an individuality all its own, College Park is located near the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, on Interstates I-85 and I-285. Originating from a land grant awarded in 1846, and chartered in 1895, the City has the fourth largest urban historic district in Georgia, with 867 structures on the National Register of Historic Places.

The mission of the Inspections Department for the City of College Park is to safeguard the community's safety and well-being by ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal building codes and standards. The Chief Building Official plays an essential role in overseeing the safety and regulatory compliance of all residential and commercial development within the city.

The Chief Building Official ensures that construction and development projects adhere to the city's regulations and specifications, fostering a safe environment for workers and residents alike. This position requires close coordination with contractors, developers, and city officials, enabling successful project outcomes through expert oversight of inspection processes, including foundation, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, erosion control, and occupancy standards.

Responsibilities extend to conducting field inspections, interpreting and enforcing codes, reviewing construction plans, and addressing concerns related to drainage, erosion, and unsafe structures. This role is integral to maintaining the city’s building integrity by overseeing the issuance of permits, stop-work orders, and corrective actions as needed.

 

The position requires the successful candidate to meet the following qualifications:

  • ICC Certification as a Commercial Combination Inspector and Residential Combination Inspector
  • ICC Building Plans Examiner certification required
  • State of Georgia licensure required by the State Construction Board and certification from the International Code Council for each relevant construction trade/practice
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in construction trades, including three (3) years in a supervisory role
  • Proficiency in building codes, erosion and sedimentation control standards, and construction methods and materials
