Job Description Summary
The purpose of this position is to work closely with Traffic Management Center (TMC), transportation staff, and City Contractors to operate and maintain the city's traffic management system in a state of good repair. The position spends significant time in the field overseeing work and following up on customer service inquiries. The position oversees Signal, Sign, and Striping Contractors for the City of Sandy Springs, Georgia. The position requires rotational after hours on-call support as well as emergency operations support.
Essential Functions
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Responds to customer service inquires.
- Investigates inquiries; identifies and executes work tasks and work orders.
- Oversees roadway signs and striping programs.
- Coordinates with traffic signal and sign field crews on tasks.
- Inspects work performed by traffic signal and sign field crews.
- Manages contractor contracts and budget.
- Coordinates striping contracts (prioritize striping locations, coordinate work, and monitor/inspect work).
- Resolves malfunctions or application of system changes in electronic traffic control equipment, local intersections, and associated communications systems.
- Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
- Works in a face-paced environment to complete a variety of tasks.
Additional Functions:
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Position requires rotational after hours on-call support for up to one (1) week per month as well as emergency operations support.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum High School diploma with experience in construction management, engineering, or electrical engineering technology.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in traffic engineering/traffic operations with electronic control as primary task.
Specific License or Certification Required:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
- IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician Level II certification
Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
- Associate degree in electrical/computer engineering technology or related field
- Knowledge of basic electrical wiring and principles, both AC and DC.
- Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Knowledge of electronic traffic control devices, NEMA, and CalTrans spec hardware.
- Knowledge of the principles of Traffic Responsive and Adaptive signal operations.
- Knowledge of a full scope of field construction concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Knowledge of a variety of office equipment and skill in personal computer operation, specifically, office-oriented applications, drafting applications and custom applications related to the management of traffic control systems (may include MS Excel, MS Word, Customer Service database).
- Skill in communication, both verbally and in written form.
- Ability to recognize and isolate problems by specific nature, an example, differentiate a vehicle detection failure that is causing a short timing issue versus local timing plan settings.
- National Incident Management System (NIMS) training.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
