This is a full time position with comparable wages and excellent benefits and matching retirement contributions up to 7%. Qualified candidates must possess the following: GA State Firefighter or NPQ1 Certification, Class A, B, or F Georgia Driver’s License, and preferred candidate has EMT-B or higher, or the ability to obtain in 18 months of employment provided by the county. Successful candidates must pass a background check, drug screen, physical ability test, pre-employment physical, and have an acceptable driving record. Public Safety – Fire Department

JOB SUMMARY

This position performs firefighting and other emergency response functions.

MAJOR DUTIES

· Responds to emergency calls involving fire, medical, hazardous materials, nature and manmade disasters, rescue, and other critical incidents.

· Implements actions necessary to save lives and property; assists EMTs and Paramedics in the provision of emergency medical services.

· Inspects apparatus and equipment to ensure that it is in proper working order; performs routine maintenance of equipment as assigned.

· Maintains hydrants; tests hoses and pumps.

· Maintains and cleans station, grounds, and living quarters.

· Participates in public relations functions with schools, churches, and other organizations.

· Participates in continuing training and drill activities.

· Operates emergency vehicles to and from incident scenes and training exercises.

· Remains familiar with area streets, geography, and landmarks; learns roads and alternate routes to populated areas; learns fire hydrant locations.

· Conducts and assists with public safety education, including fire safety and prevention and emergency medical instruction.

· Communicates via telephone and two-way radio; provides information and assistance to appropriate personnel; responds to requests for service and assistance.

· Prepares and/or reviews forms, reports, correspondence, and log books.

· Completes required reports of incidents occurring during an assigned shift.

· Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

· Knowledge of modern firefighting techniques and equipment.

· Knowledge of laws and regulations relating to the control and prevention of fires.

· Knowledge of department and county policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

· Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.

· Knowledge of the capabilities and uses of emergency vehicles and equipment.

· Skill in operating emergency vehicles and equipment.

· Skill in the provision of medical care in emergency situations.

· Skill in the use of radio/communications equipment.

· Skill in planning, organization, and decision making.

· Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Fire Captain assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include department standard operating procedures; county ordinances and policies; fire, rescue, and EMS protocols; NFPA standards; and life and fire safety codes. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

· The work consists of related fire suppression and other emergency response duties. The variety of emergency situations encountered contributes to the complexity of the work.

· The purpose of this position is to protect lives and property through fire prevention and suppression activities and provision of emergency medical services. Successful performance helps ensure the safety of lives and property in the community.

CONTACTS

· Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, representatives of other fire departments, law enforcement personnel, vendors, local business owners, and the general public.

· Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and educate the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

· The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizing the sense of smell.

· The work is typically performed in an office, except while at fire or other emergency scenes. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, extreme temperatures, hazardous situations, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

· Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

· Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

· Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class F driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

· Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.
