The City of Covington is currently accepting applications for the position of Tree Trimmer in the Electric Department with a starting hourly rate of $20.68 depending upon qualifications.

JOB SUMMARY

This position performs tree clearance/pruning work to cut and remove trees, limbs, branches, brush and other obstacles in the close proximity of electric lines operating at voltages of 12,470, or more, and elsewhere on City streets and other property as may be required.

 Tree Trimmer I (GD 12)
•    Entry Level
 
Tree Trimmer II (GD 13)
•    Skilled (minimum of three (3) years) in the performance of tree work from climbers (“hooks”). 
         
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•    Skilled in usage of a bucket truck at heights of up to 70 feet.
•    Skilled in the performance of tree work from climbers (“hooks”).
•    Skills in performing clearance work near energized power lines.
•    Skilled in routine maintenance of tools and equipment.
•    Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

(A)    Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and
(B)    Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in tree clearance/pruning work, at least one of which should have been at the level of trimmer or better, and
(C)    Minimum of one-year experience in bucket work; or
(D)    Any combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

•    Considerable knowledge of proper tree pruning methods, tree growth patterns, and safe clearance techniques.
•    Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.
•    Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions; 
•    Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to observe proper safety precautions; 
•    Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public; 
•    Ability to drive and operate light equipment under varying conditions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Flagging certification or the ability to obtain the same in 1 year of appointment.  Must possess a valid class B or above Georgia driver’s license and acceptable Motor Vehicle record for the past 3 years.  Must be insurable by the City of Covington motor vehicle insurance carrier.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Motorized vehicles and equipment, including a bucket truck, climbers (‘hooks’), chain and poles saws, mechanized brush chippers, hand tools and other equipment appropriate to this type of work.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibrations.  The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
