Listing Summary

Job Summary/objective:

Provides policy, outreach, and communications support on behalf of the City Manager's Office and for the City Councilmembers in his or her role as the representative to the district, and as a member of the Council. Develops and analyzes policies, including but not limited to preparing summaries, conducting research and identifying supporting data and metrics for the Councilmember.  Performs an important role in working directly with City Council and the City Manager’s Office.

Essential Function and Duties/Responsibilities:

  • This high-profile position demands strong oral and written communication skills to effectively assist both citizens and City officials.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees and the public. 
  • Briefs the Councilmembers on all community and media issues relating to the districts and ensures the council members are abreast of items on all committee meeting agendas, council briefings, and council agendas.
  • Executes the implementation of projects initiated by the Council.
  • Serves as primary communication between the Council, City Manager’s Office, city departments, citizens, and outside organizations to ensure clear and open lines of communication.
  • Represents the City Council and the City Manager’s Office at community meetings and ceremonial events.
  • Coordinated with department heads and councilmembers to organize meetings, events, and outreach activities, such as town hall meetings, neighborhood gatherings, and special events.
  • Handles communications tasks, including coordinating with the Communications Team and media and social media inquiries.
  • Assists with constituent services by research inquiries and complaints, providing answers, and referring issues to the appropriate department as needed.
  • Covers a wide range of tasks, from handling small logistical challenges to actively participating in city management initiatives.
  • Subject to working after hours and weekends.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Must have Microsoft Word/Excel or similar software skills.
  • Knowledge of City structure and standard procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally including excellent telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills.

Education, Credentials, Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent of four years of college education in business management, public administration, or any related field.
  • Requires Public Service experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds).
  • Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
  • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors:

  • Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
