PT- Public Communication Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for recording, editing, script writing, and presenting high-quality videos and photos for the City of Peachtree City. The purpose of this role is to implement the City’s branding, imaging, and messaging efforts through visual storytelling with the media, residents, business owners, and visitors that is open, inclusive, transparent, professional, and consistent with the City of Peachtree City’s brand. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to photo and video archiving, motion graphics and sound design, and visual/logistical support during City events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Capture and edit high-quality videos and photographs across digital platforms for internal and external City-related events, departmental needs, and marketing projects.
  • Transform raw clips and video footage into high-quality finished videos used to inform, engage, and inspire their audience. They use specialized software applications and editing tools to merge content from multiple sources and add pictures, graphics, visual effects, voice, sound effects, and music.
  • Select footage, photos, and transition effects for assigned projects independently or collaboratively with staff and the Public Communications Manager while managing and maintaining photo and video archives, including organizing captured b-rolls, unedited images, and project drafts.
  • Work closely with the Public Communications Manager and Department Leaders to ensure all visual storytelling of photos and video supports project needs and the City of Peachtree City’s brand standards through effective scriptwriting. This includes influencing the creative direction and emotional impact of the finished product. They need to be knowledgeable about technical aspects of production, such as camera angles, lighting, and sound design. 
  • Identifies images and videos to enhance social media presence and other platforms like TikTok and YouTube. This individual must be adept in creating visually compelling and engaging video content that helps brands stand out, build audience connection, increase engagement, and ultimately achieve marketing goals by effectively telling stories, showcasing products, and establishing brand identity through high-quality visuals and storytelling techniques.
  • Responsible for special projects assigned.
  • Assists with various City events as needed.
  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Comprehensive understanding and experience in photography and videography principles, techniques, and equipment.
  • Familiarity with natural and artificial lighting setups for different shooting environments, with the ability to work under various lighting conditions and adjust settings accordingly.
  • Post-production capabilities using photo and video editing software (i.e., Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, AfterEffects, etc.)
  • Excellent eye for detail and composition, including color correction and sound design.
  • Capacity to adapt to different photo and video styles per assigned projects.
  • Ability to conceptualize and execute visual projects from start to finish while working efficiently and effectively to meet deadlines as required.
  • Ability to operate and maintain video, photography, lighting, and audio equipment.
  • Fundamental knowledge and abilities in graphic design
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Strong grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills are required.
  • Skill in public speaking.
  • Skill in strong ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel, City personnel, and the public.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Public Communications Manager assigns work according to general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include City and department policies and procedures, as well as an overall marketing and communications strategy for the City. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.     

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of varied public communication duties with awareness of the political climate in which the position operates.  Multiple demands and time constraints contribute to the complexity of the work. 
  • The purpose of this position is to enhance the City’s communications efforts.  Successful performance contributes to promoting the City’s brand image, events, programs, and initiatives.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, journalists, graphic designers, photographers, marketing professionals, and the public.    
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, position the city brand, and troubleshoot complaints.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed in the field (e.g., shooting photos or videos of work in progress, meeting with other departments) but will also include sitting at a desk or table or intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and distinguishes between shades of color. 
  • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in hot/cold or inclement weather.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and competency level commonly associated with completing a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with completing an apprenticeship/internship, specialized training, or having had a similar position for one to two years in either Public Relations, Media Relations, or government communication.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
