Job Summary:    (All Incumbents may not perform all duties.) 

Operates one or more pieces of heavy equipment at a skilled level such as:  a track hoe, loader, dozer, off road dump truck, grader, roll off truck; operates light equipment such as mowing equipment, farm tractors, hydro seeder, flatbed truck etc.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: (All incumbents may not perform all duties.) 

• Operates bulldozers, track hoe, and front-end loaders to cover trash.
• Operates Roll Off trucks to transport solid waste.
• Operates mowing machines including bush hogs, riding and push mowers to cut grass; cuts down dead trees; clears storm drains; edges sidewalks; plants shrubs; and collects litter/trash.
• Performs basic maintenance on all equipment including washing, changing oil, greasing, sharpening blades and changing flat tires.
• May assist in performing unskilled or semi-skilled labor such as digging/covering trash, collecting trash and residential garbage, and/or trimming trees and shrubs.
• May operate a pick-up truck when assigned to litter control.
• May assist in training new employees and in assigning, checking and approving work of Laborers and other Equipment Operators.
• Regular and predictable attendance is required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

Education and Experience:

• Ability to read and write.       
• Four years combined Equipment Operator I or II experience required.
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid Class A or B Driver’s License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
• Due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position, incumbents will be subject to random drug testing. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of geography of the County including major streets and landmarks.
• Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures. 
• Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations and safe operation of heavy equipment.
• Expert knowledge of and skill in operating various types of heavy equipment.                             
• Ability to take and follow directions from supervisor.   Ability to give directions to and gain compliance from assigned staff.
• Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
• Ability to lift objects of up to 50 pounds.

Physical Ability:  Essential functions continuously require the ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) and move oneself by walking; maintain body equilibrium to prevent failing when walking, standing, or navigating narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces; repetitively use hands/arms/legs. Incumbents constantly handle stress and emotion; concentrate on tasks; remember names and other details; concentrate on tasks; examine and observe details; make decisions, adjust to change. Additionally; essential functions require the continuous ability to be on call; attendance at work related meetings or trainings; operate equipment; stay organized and maintain of stamina during the work day.

Essential functions frequently require the ability to bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs, twisting at the waist, hips or knees; ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and ramps; and grasp items such as tools, levers, or equipment. Incumbents frequently must be able to think analytically and use effective written communication. Additionally, essential functions require frequent ability to work irregular hours (nights and/or weekends); direct others; meet deadlines; and use math/calculations.

Essential functions occasionally require the ability to move oneself by crawling on hands and knees; position oneself by crouching or kneeling; reach overhead; push or pull items; move/transport items weighing up to 25lbs. Additionally incumbents must occasionally be able to discriminate colors and handle confidential information.
