Traffic Signal Technician

JOB SUMMARY 

This position performs technical duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals and other traffic control systems. 

MAJOR DUTIES 

  •  Installs and maintains traffic signals, caution lights, school flashers, and vehicle approaches.
  •  Designs and installs street signs and road signs; replaces damaged or faded signs.
  •  Trims trees and limbs obstructing roadways, line of sight, and overhead wires.
  •  Changes-out traffic signal boxes; oversees the work of contractors.
  •  Operates bucket truck in the installation, repair, and maintenance of signs and signals.
  •  Designs, installs, and maintains pavement markings; installs roadway delineators; removes old traffic markings.
  •  Writes, files, and enters work orders into computerized system.
  •  Re-installs cabinets; rewires components.
  •  Deigns street name blades and speed limit signs; installs radar sign.
  •  Locates underground wires and conduits.
  •  Performs other related duties as assigned. 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION 

  •  Knowledge of Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  •  Knowledge of traffic control cabinet components.
  •  Knowledge of traffic control software.
  •  Knowledge of fiber optic and electrical wiring principles.
  •  Knowledge of the geography of the city, including roads, streets, and subdivisions.
  •  Skill in the construction, installation, and repair of traffic signals and other traffic control devices.
  •  Skill in the operation of a bucket truck.
  •  Skill in dealing with the general public.
  •  Skill in oral and written communication.

 SUPERVISORY CONTROLS 

The City Engineer assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. 

GUIDELINES 

Guidelines include MUTCD guidelines and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK 

  • The work consists of related technical duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the work.
  • The purpose of this position is to installs, maintain, and repair traffic signals and other traffic control systems. Successful performance in this position contributes to the safety of city streets. 

CONTACTS 

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, contractors, representatives of Georgia Power, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • The work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and inclement weather. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY 

None. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Associates degree required; and
  • More than three years of related experience required; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Georgia Department of Transportation Flagger Certification.
  • Must possess or obtain within one year of employment, IMSA Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Certification and IMSA Traffic Signal Level I &II.
  • Must successsfully pass a criminal background check, motor vehicle report check, post-offer drug screen, and physical.
