JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for assisting workers engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of power lines and electrical distribution equipment and services.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists crews during emergency power outages caused by storms or accidents.
  • Assists in handling service work orders involving the installation, construction, modification, repair, and maintenance of electrical distribution lines and equipment.
  • Assists with stringing wires for installation on poles and in trenches.    
  • Checks supplies and materials inventory to determine if re-orders are necessary.
  • Cleans and maintains department building and work areas.
  • Cleans and maintains department equipment and vehicles.
  • Flags traffic at work sites when necessary.
  • Loads and transports materials and equipment to job sites.
  • May operate bucket truck to replace bulbs in streetlights.
  • May work on 600 volts or less without supervision of a lineman.
  • Stocks the line truck; checks materials in and out of warehouse for line, streetlight, and underground construction, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Trims tree limbs and clears brush from lines, transformers, and rights-of-way.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

Possession of a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

 

Additional Requirements:

Must answer 75% of calls during training period.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

  • Knowledge of the operation of electrical construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions for working with energized electrical lines.
  • Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the operation, maintenance, and routine repair of equipment and tools used in electrical construction and maintenance.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must typically perform work while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, and stooping.  The employee lifts light and heavy objects, climbs poles and ladders, and uses tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed outdoors.  The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, high voltage, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as gloves.
