Position: Heavy Equipment Operator (FT)                        

Department:   Road Department

Starting Salary: $17.20/hour - $19.00/hour                    

FLSA Status:   Non-Exempt

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for operating a variety of heavy road maintenance and construction equipment.

Major Duties:

  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment to facilitate department work processes safely and efficiently. 
  • Inspects equipment prior to use to ensure that it is in proper operating condition; checks brakes, mirrors, lights, wipers, belts, hoses, air pressure, fluid levels, etc. 
  • Cleans, services, and makes minor repairs to equipment. 
  • Performs equipment maintenance duties such as lubricating, greasing, and checking air, oil, gas, and other fluids. 
  • Loads dump trucks and hauls sand, dirt, clay, asphalt, and other materials to work sites. 
  • Flags for traffic and work sites. 
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools. 
  • Locates utilities. 
  • Clears debris from roads and rights-of-way. 
  • Hauls equipment and materials to and from work sites. 
  • Mows county rights-of-way. 
  • Cut trees; removes and chips storm debris. 
  • Patches holes using asphalt or cold patch. 
  • Cleans culvers and storm drains. 
  • Assists with snow removal operations. 
  • Installs driveway pipes. 
  • Grades county roads. 
  • Seals cracks in asphalt. 
  • Performs other related duties as required for the efficient operations of the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
  • One to three years of experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems. 
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class A CDL issued by the State of Georgia. 
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

The successful candidate must pass a Background/Reference Check, and Pre-Employment Drug Screenings prior to the start of employment.
