JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to develop and implement a variety of recreation programs and special events for the City of Smyrna.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Under the general supervision of the Recreation Services Manager:
  • Produces and administers a variety of recreation programs and special events offerings in a variety of park settings for the general public; conducts program, activity and product research; recruits instructors, presenters, and volunteers necessary to deliver quality programs.
  • Coordinates and plans camps to coincide with school breaks (summer, fall, winter, spring, etc.); recruit and train camp staff; responsible for camp scheduling, including reserving needed facilities.
  • Assists with marketing for Department programs and events including: advertising and promotional platforms, social media, website content, publications, surveys, etc.
  • Coordinates and organizes a variety of special events and develops new events with volunteer participation and sponsorships.
  • Develops, manages, and maintains budgets and financial records for all program offerings.
  • Assists departmental staff with various events and programs as needed.
  • Serves as public contact for department events and marketing efforts.
  • Evaluates organizational performance and recommends program improvements; implements work unit goals and objectives that are aligned with department strategic initiatives; analyzes policy and recommends policy modifications; maintains statistical data to support the department strategic planning process; participates in special projects as recommended.
  • Represents the department on various, appointed City committees.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION 

  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques.
  • Knowledge of how things mechanically work in the facility and maintenance needs.
  • Knowledge of event planning.
  • Knowledge of record keeping and maintenance.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in generating reports, newsletters, and flyers. 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS 

The Recreation Services Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The manager spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. 

GUIDELINES 

Guidelines include new laws applying to driving city vehicles, OSHA guidelines and regulations, American Red Cross CPR, First Aid & AED standards and guidelines, City of Smyrna guidelines,  and standards and National Recreation and Parks Association & Georgia Recreation and Parks Association trends. These guidelines require judgement, selection, and interpretation in application. 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK 

  • The work consists of various event planning, record keeping/maintenance, and administrative duties. Communicating the facility’s inability to host an event because of not having a slot contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to program activities and special events for the community. Success in this position contributes to the availability of opportunities for residents of all ages the ability to participate in classes, programs, and events.

CONTACTS                                                                     

  • Contacts are typically with department and city employees, civic groups, program and special event participants, contract labor instructors, and general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services and to give or exchange information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, using tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes a sense of smell.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY 

This position has functional supervision over assigned personnel within an area, department, or unit. Functional supervision typically involves the ability to assign, coordinate, and review quality and quantity of work of other employees. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, or related field; supplemented by at least (3) years’ experience that includes dealing with the general public, planning and implementing recreational programs; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check, credit check, and MVR check.
  • Must successfully pass a drug screening.
