  JOB SUMMARY                                                                                                              

The Grounds Maintenance Worker performs a variety of landscaping duties: mows grass; plants flowers and shrubs; weed eats around signs and fence lines; edges curb lines; clears leaves, tree limbs and other debris from park areas; spreads and hauls ground cover, dirt, or mulch; applies herbicides and pesticides; prunes trees and shrubs; weeds flower beds; aerates and spreads grass seed; services irrigation systems; grooms and lines ball fields; and removes snow and ice,etc. An incumbent in this position may be designated a Grounds Maintenance Worker I, II, or III.

 

  MAJOR DUTIES                                                                                                              

  1. Operates or uses a County vehicle, and various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments such as lawn mower, weed eater, blowers, tillers, bobcat, tractor, dump truck, wheel barrel, jack hammer, sledge hammer, saws, chippers, back hoes, and other power or motorized equipment.
  2. Picks up trash and debris at park facilities; cleans restrooms.
  3. Checks playground for safety and makes any needed repairs to equipment.
  4. Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and work areas: monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment.
  5. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational goals.
  6. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

  KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION                                                                                                              

  1. Basic knowledge of the principles, methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, landscaped areas, and related equipment
  2. Knowledge of potential hazards and applicable safety precautions necessary for the protection of the public and employees in a parks and recreation setting
  3. Skill in interpersonal relations
  4. Skill in oral and written communication

  SUPERVISORY CONTROLS                                                                                                              

The Grounds Maintenance Crew Leader assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

 

  GUIDELINES                                                                                                              

Guidelines include local, state, and federal laws, codes, rules, and regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

 

     COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK    

    • The work consists of related grounds maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
    • The purpose of this position is to assist in grounds maintenance duties. Success in this position contributes to a safe and well-maintained work environment for county personnel.

     PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT   

    • The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
    • The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, warehouse, or outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather.

 

     SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

     SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES   

    • Possession of a valid State of Georgia driver's license (Class C) and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) in compliance with County Safety and Loss Control Guidelines. Completion of the State of Georgia Department of Transportation Defensive Driving Course and/or Emergency Vehicle Operation Certification within twelve (12) months of employment.

 

    • Grounds Maintenance Worker II
      • Pesticide License or Class A CDL
      • Experience in irrigation operation and repair
      • Erosion control
    • Grounds Maintenance Worker III
      • Pesticide License AND Class A CDL
      • Experience in irrigation operation and repair
      • Erosion control
      • Supervision experience

     MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS    

    • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
    • No experience requirements.
    • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's licenses issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
