POSITION SUMMARY

The position evaluates proposed plans and designs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations. This position reports to the Chief Building Official.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

•          Reviews building and site construction plans for compliance with architectural, civil, utility, and other regulations. Primarily review mechanical, electrical, plumbing, but may also review for structural, fire, life safety, and accessibility.

•          Stay current on changes to building codes, zoning laws, and other regulations relevant to plan reviews.

•          Assists and responds to design professionals, contractors, developers, other government agencies, and the public on interpreting ordinances, laws, rules, and regulations.

•          Conducts research regarding building, fire, zoning conditions and administrative questions.

•          Enters plan and permit data and coordinates related activities with co-workers.

•          Determines appropriate construction permit fees.

•          Keep accurate records of plan reviews, including notes on any issues identified and actions taken.

•          Assist in the issuing of construction permits once plans have been approved.

•          Attend preconstruction meetings with architects, engineers, owners, contractors, and developers to review plans and ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.

•          Complete field inspections to review for code compliance or alternative of compliance. This includes an evaluation of construction, occupancy, fire protection, exposure, and

emergency planning.

• May perform routine building inspection assignments in support of inspection staff.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, ICC Certifications, or related field AND Four years of planning review experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above will also be considered.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Must possess and pass an MVR check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of established building and construction codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of building construction procedures and methods required in the performance of duties
  • Knowledge of the terminology used within the department
  • Ability to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain an assortment of records, reports and information.
  • Ability to communicate with supervisors and other staff members.
  • Ability to use independent judgment.
  • Ability to perform the mathematical calculations required by the job.
  • Ability to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques required by the job.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply regulations and procedures of the department.
  • Ability to work under a minimum degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention to detail and tight deadlines.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

May work an adjusted schedule for assisting in events occurring after 5:00 p.m. such as meetings, or planned events.
